First Liquor Banning Notice Issued – Darwin City

Police

The first liquor banning notice in the Northern Territory was issued this morning, within three hours of the new Liquor Act Legislation becoming effective.

New laws giving Territory Police greater powers to ban troublemakers from Pub precincts for up to a year came into effect at midnight last night.

A 26-year-old male received the first notice at approximately 2.30 am this morning after behaving in a disorderly manner at a licensed premise in the Darwin entertainment precinct.

The man was issued with a notice banning him from all licensed premises in the designated area for a 48 hour period.

The first Territory designated area covers all of Darwin's Central Business District, including the Esplanade and the Waterfront precinct.

Earlier this week, Police Commissioner, John McRoberts joined the Minister for Alcohol Policy, Delia Lawrie, and Justin Coleman from the Australian Hotels Association, to warn troublemakers of the new legislation.

From today, under the new legislation, Police, security staff, licensees and inspectors can seize any suspected 'fake' identifications.
