Emergency crews were called to a fire in Edmunds Street, Darwin, yesterday after a power transformer exploded.

Patrons and staff at Throb Nightclub, Squires, Manolis Restaurant and surrounding premises were evacuated when the transformer exploded just before 11pm last night. Police, Fire and Rescue Service, Power and Water and St John Ambulance crews attended the scene.

Power was cut to the area and several roads were blocked off while emergency crews attended the fire.

Investigations into the cause of the explosion are underway but police believe there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.
