Police were alerted to a fatal motor vehicle accident on the Victoria Highway at 8:10pm tonight.

It appears the driver of a Mazda 3 sedan has pulled out of Zimin Drive onto the Victoria Highway at Katherine and collided with a line marking truck.

Police, Fire, Emergency Services and St John Ambulance members attended the scene.

The sole male occupant of the sedan has died as a result of the crash. The age and identity of the male at this time is unknown. Nil injury was sustained to the driver of the truck.

The Victoria Highway is currently closed to all traffic and Major Crash Investigators are examining the scene. It is not known what factors are involved in the crash. An investigation will be continuing and a file will be prepared for the Coroner.

Territory Duty Superintendent Bruce Porter says "this is a tragic incident and a timely reminder for drivers to stay vigilant on the road. Road safety is everyone's business and when we lose a member of our community on the roads it has long lasting effects on families and friends. We just want people to be safe."
