It is alleged that the man was driving a Toyota utility along the 17 Mile main access road at approximately 2:30 pm when he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash into a tree.

Melville Island Police and local medical staff attended the scene, locating the male deceased and two passengers.

The passengers were treated at the Melville Island Clinic and have since been released.

Investigations into the exact cause of the incident are continuing.

Territory Duty Superintendent Rob Farmer said this again highlights the importance of driving to the conditions.

"It appears that the wet weather conditions at the time may have been a factor in the crash.

"This is a tragic incident and I advise all drivers to take this message on board.
If it's wet, slow down. If you're tired, pull over and take a nap. If you're drinking, don't drive and always remember to wear your seatbelt. Taking these simple steps will dramatically decrease the chances of another life being tragically lost on our roads" he said.

This now takes the NT road toll to nine, compared to five for the same period last year.
