Police

The male was the driver and sole occupant of the Ford Falcon travelling west when it crashed on Ilparra Road.

Initial investigations appear the motor vehicle driven by the deceased has drifted on to the opposite side of the road before leaving and impacting with a steel power pole. The vehicle has continued to travel for approximately a further 50meters before becoming stationary.

It appears the man was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash however the man was ejected from the vehicle at some stage during the crash. It has not been determined at this time if speed, fatigue or alcohol were factors in the crash.

A short time later Police and St Johns ambulance attended the scene however the male has died whilst being moved into the ambulance.

Territory Duty Superintendent Bruce Porter said that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing and more information will be provided when available.

"This was a horrific crash and it is a timely reminder to all drivers that extreme care needs to be taken on the roads at al times."

The road toll for the Northern Territory for 2010 as of 13 March stands at six. For the same period last year the road toll was two.
