Fatal Electrocution – Palmerston

Police

A 23-year-old male has received fatal injuries after being electrocuted at his home in Driver, Palmerston, at approximately 6:00pm last night.

Police have been told that the male climbed onto his roof to adjust a television antenna when he received an electric shock and fell over.

The fall was heard by his 21-year-old wife who was inside the house at the time. She climbed onto the roof, located her husband not breathing, called an ambulance and began CPR.

A St John Ambulance attended along with Police and Fire and Rescue members and the male was conveyed to the Royal Darwin Hospital where he was pronounced deceased shortly after.

Investigations into the cause of the electrocution are ongoing however initial indicators appear that the electric shock may have come from wiring attached to a solar hot water system on the roof.

In light of this tragic incident, Police would like to remind the public to take extreme caution when coming into contact with electrical products.

Palmerston Investigations Unit Sergeant Rob James said the public should not take matters into their own hands, but instead contact a qualified tradesman to look at faults.

"This time of the year with the weather it is very dangerous when climbing onto roofs, not only do you have these types of hazards, but you have wet roofing iron which is slippery and may result in a fall and serious injuries," he said.
