It is alleged that the 22-year-old driver was travelling in a white Holden Commodore along Lyndavale Drive and after overtaking another vehicle, lost control and crashed into a tree located on the footpath.

Police, NT Fire and Rescue and St John Ambulance personnel attended the scene.

The man was extracted from the vehicle and conveyed to the Alice Springs Hospital, however he died a short time later.

Lyndavale Drive was closed off for a number of hours as police examined the scene. The road has now been re-opened.

Investigations into the exact circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing.

This now takes the NT road toll to 10 compared to nine for the same period last year.
