A female pedestrian has died after being hit by a motor vehicle travelling on the Stuart Highway at Alice Springs just before 7:00pm.

The south bound lane from the South Stuart Highway / Palm Circuit intersection has been closed. Traffic is being diverted along Palm Circuit past the Heavitree Gap.

Police are investigating and there are no further details at this time.

The Territory road toll now stands at 23, compared with 16 at the same time last year.
