Explosives - Darwin

Police

Police were notified by media agencies of explosives being utilised at the Greek Orthodox Easter celebrations on Saturday night.

Territory Duty Superintendent Mike Murphy said "Northern Territory Police are dedicated to keeping people safe.

"The explosives appear to be unplanned, not condoned by the organising committee, appeared to create some fear within the immediate area and had the potential to injure bystanders and damage property.

"Any planned event involving fireworks or other dangerous good requires consultation with a number of parties including Northern Territory Police and Fire Service and the concerned local council, with authority granted by NT WorkSafe. With this consultation, risk principles are applied to remove and minimise any risk; such as exclusion areas and fire control" he said.

Consultation will occur between the relevant agencies regarding future events.

"The detonation of these improvised explosive devices in this scenario is unacceptable and I would urge anyone with information in relation to the identity of the persons involved to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

"I would also urge anyone with information regarding future events where unauthorised fireworks or explosives are intended to be used to contact Police so swift intervention can occur and the risk removed" said Territory Duty Superintendent Mike Murphy.

The Northern Territory Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre did not receive any calls regarding the explosions.
