Escape Custody - Alice Springs

A 17-year-old male youth is currently in custody at Alice Springs Hospital after attempting to escape police custody early this morning.

Police initially apprehended the youth in the Memorial Club car park after receiving reports of a disturbance from the club's security personnel at about 4:00 am. The youth was arrested at the scene in relation to outstanding matters and conveyed to Alice Springs Hospital for treatment to an injury sustained before police arrival.

At about 5:30am while waiting for medical treatment the offender attempted to escape police custody on foot towards Gap Road. Members pursued the youth along Gap Road to the intersection of Bagot Road where he attempted to cross before being struck by a vehicle.

The vehicle was travelling at about 30 km/hr when the incident occurred and received a smashed window as a result of the crash.

Immediately after the collision the offender got up and continued to run down Bagot Road into the Todd River where he was apprehended by police.

He was conveyed back to Alice Springs Hospital where he remains under police guard.

The youth will appear in Alice Springs Court at a later date in relation to this matter.
