EPIRB Activation

Police

NT Police were alerted to an EPIRB activation near Melville Island over the weekend.

At 11:45am yesterday police received a report from AUSSAR stating that an EPIRB had been activated between Cape Gambier and Melville Island. A CareFlight helicopter was deployed and later located the 4.5 abalone vessel at Red Cliffs.

The two male occupants were both in good health and returned to Darwin on board the CareFlight aircraft.

It is believed the vessel experienced engine failure and private arrangements are being made to recover it today.

Senior Sergeant Steve Martin says "it is extremely important to ensure you have the right safety equipment on board before heading out on the water, every boat should carry an EPIRB, sufficient food and water and let some one know exactly where you are going and when you'll be back".

"The actions of these men are commendable, they had sufficient safety equipment on board and used it correctly, this successful rescue was a good example of preparedness to other boat users".
