Easter Traffic campaign –Alice Springs

Police

Police arrested 20 drink drivers in Alice Springs during their Easter Traffic Campaign.

And more than half of those were caught in just over four hours on Friday morning.

Sergeant Conan Robertson of the Southern Traffic Operations Unit said the results were extremely disappointing, especially in light of the extensive media coverage received prior to the beginning of the campaign.

"One of the highest readings was that of a 36-year-old man who was a disqualified driver driving with a blood alcohol level of .216 per cent. He was pulled over by police just before 11.30am on Friday on Gap Road.

"Then there was the 16-year-old male driving a stolen car in the early hours of Friday morning while he had a blood alcohol level of .152 per cent. "

Sergeant Robertson said police also issued 85 traffic infringement notices and a further nine people will be summonsed for traffic offences. There were also eight minor traffic accidents where no-one was injured and a further four where people received minor injuries.

"We are very disappointed with these sorts of results which appear to indicate that drivers simply aren't getting the message, however we will keep up the pressure to get drunks off the road by continuing to target drink drivers."
