Drug Seizures - Darwin

Police

Members from the Special Operations Section have arrested two men in relation to importing commercial amounts of drugs in to the Territory, as a result of Operation Iodine

At about 4:00pm on Wednesday police attended Darwin Airport and apprehended a 22-year-old Brisbane man after a drug detector dog gave a positive reaction to him. He was subsequently searched by police resulting in the seizure of a substantial amount of MDMA pills.

A second 21-year-old male was arrested later that night after police located him at a hotel near Darwin Airport.

A total of 576 MDMA pills weighing a total of 159 grams and 10 grams of cannabis were seized by police.

Both men were conveyed to Darwin Watch House; the 21-year-old man is due to appear in Darwin Magistrates Court on 14 April. The 22-year-old man was remanded in custody and will appear 1st April.

Both men are expected to be charged with Possess Commercial Quantity of MDMA and Supply Commercial Quantity of MDMA. The 21 year old male will also face charges of Possess Cannabis.

Detective Senior Sergeant Peter Malley says "this has been a good result for police".

"The Northern Territory Police will continue to target organised crime groups and disrupt them from distributing illicit drugs into our community".

In a separate seizure members from the Drug Enforcement Section arrested a 27-year-old man in relation to various drug offences.

Police executed a search warrant of a home in Durack on Wednesday resulting in the seizure of the following:

1824.25 grams of cannabis
228 cannabis seeds
17 cannabis plants
Hydroponics equipment

The man was arrested yesterday afternoon and conveyed to Darwin Watch House he is expected to be charged with the following offences:

Cultivate prohibited drug - trafficable amount
Possess Schedule 2 Drug - commercial quantity

He has been bailed to appear in Darwin Magistrates Court on 1 April.
