A 55-year-old man from Adelaide will appear in Katherine Court today in relation to a number drug trafficking offences.

Members from the Drug Enforcement Section's, 'Remote Community Drug Desk' apprehended the man at the Katherine Weigh Bridge yesterday after drug detector dog 'Taipan' provided a positive response to a spare tyre attached to his box trailer.

The man made admitted he was carrying a significant amount of cannabis and as a result a search of his vehicle was conducted.

Police located a total of 2268 grams of cannabis hidden in the spare tyre, and some that had been concealed in a number of fake aerosol cans throughout the vehicle.

The offender was charged in relation to the following offences:

Supply Schedule 2 drug - Commercial quantity
Possess cannabis - Commercial quantity

Senior Sergeant Clint Sims said this was a great cannabis seizure with an estimated street value of at least $113,500 if it had been sold in remote communities where police believe it had been intended.

"NT Police will continue to target drug traffickers in an effort to reduce the availability and flow of cannabis to all remote areas of the Northern Territory" he said.
