Drug Seizure - Adelaide River

Police

Two men were apprehended in Adelaide River yesterday after they attempted to smuggle a substantial amount of drugs into a remote Territory community.

Police were conducting vehicle searches on the Stuart Highway near Adelaide River when they stopped a white Toyota Landcruiser on the Stuart Highway at about 10:00 pm last night.

Members deployed a drug detector dog as part of the inspection, which provided a positive reaction to the rear storage compartment of the car. A subsequent search was conducted revealing a total of 408.6 grams of cannabis which had been concealed in a number of clip seal bags, wrapped in packing tape and hidden behind a panel in the back of the vehicle.

It is believed the drugs were destined for the Beswick, about 111 kilometres south-east of Katherine.

Two male occupants aged 18 and 29 will be summonsed for the possession and supply of a trafficable quantity of cannabis.

Acting Senior Sergeant Joseph Carbone from the Drug Enforcement Section said NT Police would continue to target drug runners.

"We will continue to combat the importation of drugs into our remote communities and put these offenders before the courts" he said.
