Drug Operation nets Amphetamines/Cannabis

Police

A drug operation by Northern Territory police has resulted in the seizure of significant quantities of amphetamines.

Codenamed Operation Gopher, the ongoing operation began on Monday, and targets low-to-middle level drug dealers in the Greater Darwin region.

Superintendent Matt Hollamby of the Drug and Organised Crime Division, says "The aim of the operation wasn't to target the 'Mr Bigs' of drug distribution, but focussed on the public nuisance dealers who make life difficult for law abiding people going about their daily life."

Over the first four days of Operation Gopher, 16 premises have been raided, five people have been arrested, 11 people have been summonsed to court and three people have been issued drug infringement notices.

Two firearms were also seized.

The most significant result came today as officers uncovered a haul of amphetamine that has a potential value of 60 thousand dollars.

In total, Operation Gopher has netted 110 grams of cannabis and 90 grams of amphetamines - approaching almost 100-thousand dollars in street value.

"It's a great result to get these drugs off the street before the Christmas/New Year period." said Superintendent Hollamby.

Superintendent Hollamby says "Neighbours know who the drug dealers are, and have a right to go about their business without the interruption of people dealing drugs at the end of their street."

"Police are always keen to hear about drug activity and people are encouraged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 if they have any information." Said Superintendent Hollamby
