Drivers Warned for Finke – Alice Springs

Police

Drivers going to watch the Finke Desert Race are warned police will be out in force during the long weekend.

Alice Springs Sergeant Conan Robertson said police would be on patrol at the race and the Finke Community as well as on the Stuart Highway.

"Every year we conduct a special operation for the Finke Desert Race to ensure that competitors are the only ones using the track," Sergeant Robertson said

"Police will be conducting checks for speeding drivers and unregistered vehicles, which will include unregistered motorcycles and trailers. Drivers can also expect they will be breath-tested for alcohol and can be swabbed for drugs. The drug dogs will also be on hand at many of the RBT stations and will assist with vehicle searches where appropriate.

"Our advice remains the same each year.," Sgt Robertson said.

"If you're heading out to the race and intend to drink, don't drive. Either stay out overnight or have a designated driver."

Sergeant Robertson said police would be patrolling campsites along the track to ensure everyone has a good time in a safe environment.

"The Finke Desert Race is one of the major highlights in Central Australia and always attracts large crowds. While most people are usually well-behaved, they need to be aware there will be a 24-hour-a-day police presence during the three-day event to ensure everyone has a great time. "
