Drink Drive Assault - Jabiru

Police

A 44-year-old Darwin man will be summonsed for drink driving offences and assault following a roll-over near Jabiru in the early hours of this morning.

A passing road train driver located the man asleep and snoring in the cab of his rolled utility 10 kilometres out of Jabiru on the Arnhem Highway at about 12.30am.

The Good Samaritan called emergency services and then managed to wake the man and assist him from the vehicle. When the man was told the emergency services had been called, it's alleged he punched the road train driver in the face.

On Police arrival, members located a full unopened stubby of beer in the driver's side cup tray.

The man was taken to the Jabiru Clinic where he was examined and later released.

Superintendent Helen Braam of the Northern Operational Service Division said, "It's bad enough that the driver of the vehicle was allegedly intoxicated. What I find even more disturbing is that he then allegedly assaults another person who has done the right thing in notifying the authorities. It was a shameful and cowardly act, and while I am not responsible for the actions of this man, I feel a need to publicly apologise to the road train driver and hope that one bad experience like this won't affect his decision to assist others who are in need of help in the future. I commend and thank him for his actions".
