Double fatality –Elliott - 4688164

Two children have died following a single vehicle rollover near Elliott this afternoon.

Police received a report just after 2pm that a utility had crashed on the Lake Elliott access road approximately 10 kilometres north of Elliott.

Police from Tennant Creek and Elliott attended the scene, as well as Elliott Health Clinic staff and members of the Elliott Fire and Emergency Response Group.

When they arrived they found one child, believed to be aged six or seven, already deceased and a 14-year-old child seriously injured. The teenager died at the scene a short time later. Four other young people were injured in the crash, and have been transported to Elliott to be airlifted to Alice Springs Hospital by the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The injured include a 13-year-old child who is believed to have been the driver of the vehicle.

Police from the Major Crash Unit in Alice Springs and members of the Tennant Creek Investigations Unit will be attending to investigate the cause of the crash.

No further details are available at this stage. The deaths bring the Territory road toll to 50 compared to 31 for the same period last year.
