Residents of the remote Territory community of Wadeye are being advised to make preparations for the possibility of a cyclone affecting the area in the next 24 hours.
The advice comes with the issuing of a cyclone warning by the Bureau of Meteorology extending from the mouth of the Daly River to Kalumburu in Western Australia, as a low pressure system moves along the coast; possibly developing into a category one cyclone within the next 24 hours.
Commander Jeanette Kerr of the Katherine Region said residents of the area should make preparation and listen to all advice in relation to the changing weather conditions.
"Wadeye, as with all Territory coastal communities, is well-practised in relation to preparation for cyclones and the Local Counter Disaster Committee and residents are being advised locally of the preparations to be made" she said.
Police in the area are currently evacuating outstations as well as preparing large trees and homes in the area for predicted strong winds.
