Cyclone warning – Alyangula

Police

Alyangula Police and Emergency Services are urging people to be prepared for gales and localised flooding as Tropical Cyclone Paul travels along the east coast of the Territory.

The category two cyclone is currently moving slowly south, parallel to the coast and is expected to move inland today, possibly bringing 130 km per hour winds between Nhulunbuy and Numbulwar.

Areas from Milingimbi, Elcho Island, Nhulunbuy, down to Ngukkur and Port Roper, including Alyangula are all on a Cyclone Warning, possibly being affected within 24 hours.

Areas further to the west including Maningrida and Bulman are on a Cyclone Watch, possibly being affected by the cyclone within 24-48 hours.

Local Counter Disaster Committees have met and Police are urging everyone to listen to warnings on their radios and televisions and are currently cleaning up areas within the community in preparation.

The four schools on the island as well as GEMCO have closed for the day.

Designated cyclone shelters have commenced preparation, should they be required within the next 48 hours.

The next Local Counter Disaster Committee meeting will be held at 2:30 pm.
