Crashes - Nakara and Palmerston

Police

Two men remain at Royal Darwin Hospital after two separate crashes over night.

Police and Fire and Rescue personnel were called to the first crash on Rattray Street in Nakara at 12:45 am this morning after a 21-year-old man crashed his utility into a parked car.

It is alleged the man had left a friends house on the street and travelled about 300 metres down the road before he collided with a Ford Laser. The collision caused his vehicle to roll a number of times colliding with a Subaru Forrester before coming to rest against a Toyota Corolla.

All three vehicles received substantial damage as a result of the crash.

The man was able to free himself from the Hilux before authorities arrived at the scene. St John Ambulance conveyed him to RDH where he remains in a stable condition.

Fire and Rescue Personnel attended and cleared the scene, rendering the area safe a short time later.

There are strong indications alcohol was a contributing factor and it is believed the driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Enquiries are continuing.

Authorities were called to the second crash in Palmerston at about 3:15 am after a 22-year-old man lost control of his motorcycle on Chung Wah Terrace.

It is alleged the man was travelling outbound when he collided with a pedestrian safety rail at the Essington Ave intersection causing him to get thrown off the bike landing in excess of 30 metres away.

The man was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital where he is currently undergoing surgery.

Witnesses alleged the man was riding erratically prior to the crash and police believe alcohol and speed may be contributing factors.

Enquiries are continuing into the exact cause of the crash and members will attend the scene again today.

Senior Sergeant Shaun Furniss urges motorists not to drink and drive.

"These crashes could have ended so much worse and these guys are lucky they are alive".

"Getting behind the wheel drunk is not worth it; you risk loosing your license and are not only endangering your own life but the lives of others".

"NT Police will not tolerate this behaviour and we expect to charge both of these men with a range of traffic offences in the near future - if you break the law, we will catch you" he said.
