Crash - Coolalinga

Police

A 29-year-old male remains in Royal Darwin Hospital after being injured in a car crash in Coolalinga last night.

Two males aged 29 years were travelling outbound along the Stuart Highway at approximately 8:45 pm, when the driver appears to have lost control of the vehicle, causing it to swerve into the rear of a road train.

As a result of the crash the passenger's arm was almost severed.

Police and St John Ambulance Officers attended the scene and took the male to Hospital.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to the Darwin Watch House where he remains in police custody. It is believed that speed, alcohol, drugs and inattention may have been contributing factors to the crash.

Territory Duty Superintendent Rob Burgoyne said this is yet another reminder to not only drive with care on our roads at all times, but to never put any part of your body outside of the vehicle whilst it is in motion.

"It seems the passenger had his left arm out the window at the time of the crash, causing severe injuries to the limb. With the driver believed to be under the influence of both drugs and alcohol, combined with speed and inattention, this was a tragedy waiting to happen. I implore everyone out there to take this as a warning, especially over the festive season" he said.
