Contaminated Drug Ingestion - Darwin - Update

Police

NT police have arrested two men in relation to a drug incident that led to the hospitalisation of six people in Darwin City last week.

Last Wednesday night, the victims were conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital after police received reports of people collapsing and acting in an erratic and irrational manner as a result of ingesting an unknown substance.

The Police investigation led to a number of search warrants being executed and various drugs being seized.

It is believed the drug that caused the adverse reaction was a mixture of a phenethylamine known as 2CP and ethylcathinone.

A second drug seized during the search warrants has been identified as a mixture of caffeine and a tryptamine similar to a drug known as DMT.

Detective Superintendent, Matt Hollamby, of the Drug & Organised Crime Division said these are the first seizures of 2CP and the tryptamine in the NT.

"They are analogues of Schedule 2 drugs and are illegal.'.

"We still aren't entirely sure which one caused the severe reaction but suspect it was the 2CP and ethylcathinone mixture. It is reasonably clear that these drugs were made up by an incompetent backyard chemist".

"Fortunately nobody died as a result of taking these dangerous concoctions.'

A 26 year old man has been charged with possessing a Trafficable Quantity of a Schedule 2 substance and is due to appear in Darwin Magistrates Court on 5 August.

The second man aged 21 will be summonsed for possessing Trafficable Quantities of Schedule 2 substance.

There have been no reports of similar incidents since last Wednesday, however NT Police are urging anyone who may have any of these drugs to either dispose of them or hand them into the police.
