Christmas Road Safety Traffic Campaign

Police

Police have been proactive in helping to ensure the safety of Territorians on our roads throughout the Christmas period with a reasonably positive road Safety Traffic Campaign being reported.

From the 18 December 2009 through to 8 January 2010, there were two road fatalities throughout the territory, as compared to five people killed on our roads during the same period last year.

While this remains two loss of lives too many, the reduction of the road toll and resulting trauma to families and friends is a key focus for Police, Fire and Emergency Services.

Throughout the Christmas period, Darwin region police conducted 180 random breath testing stations throughout the region, tested the blood alcohol level of 5312 drivers and subsequently arrested 121 people for drink driving.

This equates to approximately 1 in every 44 drivers tested.

Police also conducted 1522 traffic apprehensions, issued 632 traffic infringement notices, and summonsed 87 people for other traffic offences.

Darwin Commander Rob Kendrick said that the diligent efforts from police members over the festive period ensured that the majority of people on our roads had a safe Christmas.

"Those Territorians who went out and enjoyed themselves with safe, planned transport home such as a Sober Bob, I commend.

"For those few who broke the law, got fingerprinted, photographed, kissed your drivers licence goodbye and got put in our cells with other prisoners, I am sure you are now in the early stages of figuring out how to get to work or how to get the kids to school.

"I only hope you learn from your actions and next time, make the right choice and not endanger other road users again.

"Unfortunately we have already had a road death this year and the sad fact is there will be many more but be rest assured police will not let up on their enforcement efforts from 2009," Commander Kendrick said.

The target for Police Breath Analysis enforcement for the 2009/2010 financial year is 70,000. This equates to having tested 70,000 drivers by the end of June 2010.

However, following the introduction of the road safety strategy and a change in structure, Police have already conducted over 90,000 tests so far and are on track to double the financial year target.
