Car Fires - Darwin

Police

NT Police say they're determined to stamp out the deliberate torching of motor vehicles in Darwin.

Detective Superintendent Peter Bravos said police would come down hard on offenders who deliberately set vehicles alight in driveways and carports and also those who set stolen vehicles alight in an attempt to destroy evidence they have left behind.

"These offenders are not just destroying valuable assets but are putting the lives of people at real risk," he said.

"There is no excuse for this type of criminal behaviour.

"They are senseless acts of criminal damage and we will continue to direct significant investigative resources towards identifying, arresting and prosecuting these offenders."

Detective Superintendent Bravos said investigations into last night's vehicle fire at an apartment complex in Dinah Court, Stuart Park had revealed that two other vehicles in the vicinity had also been interfered with, including one that had been doused in engine oil.

"We are calling on anyone who may have seen anything unusual or who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area at around 3am this morning to contact police on 13 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000," he said.

"We also want people to ensure that valuables are not left in parked vehicles and that car keys are not openly on display in homes should offenders break in, grab the keys and make off with their vehicle."

Media pls note: Detective Superintendent Peter Bravos will be available for interview at 3 Dinah Court Stuart Park at 2pm today.
