Break-ins to cars –Alice Springs

Police

Detectives from the Property Crime Reduction Unit are investigating a series of incidents in which cars had their windows broken and property stolen from them in Alice Springs overnight.

Police have received reports of 12 cars being interfered with. Most offences occurred in the CBD with offenders targeting two vehicles in Parsons Street, one in Leichardt Terrace, one in Stott Street, two in Gap Road and two in the Target car park.

Three vehicles were also interfered with in residential areas. In one of these incidents two youths were disturbed as they were trying to push a Holden Commodore sedan out of a driveway in Raggatt Street. Offenders also tried to steal two cars in Skinner Street.

Detective Sergeant Janelle Snigg said police are appealing to anyone who had not yet reported a similar incident to come forward.

"Members of the Property Crime Reduction Unit (PCRU) will be examining CCTV footage of the CBD to identify the offenders as part of their investigation and we are confident of early arrests, however, we would also like to appeal to anyone who may have noticed any suspicious behaviour, particularly in the CBD overnight, to come forward," Det Sgt Snigg said.

"PCRU conduct regular operations targeting the CBD to try and deter this sort of offending and have a very good clear-up rate, however, because of the opportunistic nature of the offending we are appealing to people to ensure they do not leave valuables in view in their vehicles."

Anyone with information should phone police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
