Borroloola Police crack down on crime

Police

Borroloola police are taking a no tolerance approach to crime in their region, using multiple resources to crack down on illegal behaviour.

Local members in conjunction with members from the Territory Response Section (TRS) yesterday executed search warrants on a barge moored at the township, a house and a vehicle.

A 55-year-old male was arrested on an outstanding Supreme Court warrant, and will also be summonsed for possessing a drug implement.

Separately an infringement notice was issued to a 47-year-old male for allegedly possessing cannabis and a 35-year-old male will also be summonsed for possessing a drug implement.

Police have also been very active in stamping out illegal activity to help ensure the community starts the new year on a positive note.

From 31 December 2009 until 6 January 2010, police made three arrests, summonsed seven people for various charges, conducted 130 random breath tests, seized one vehicle, defected two vehicles and issued nine traffic infringement notices, 14 liquor infringement notices, and one drug infringement notice.

Police attended a local camp on Sunday 3 January and arrested a 26-year-old male for the following charges:

Engage in violent conduct
Armed with offensive weapon at night
Disorderly behaviour in a public place
Riotous behaviour in a public place
Use obscene language

A 20-year-old male was also arrested and charged for driving with a medium range blood alcohol level and driving a vehicle whilst unlicensed.

Superintendent Brent Warren said that the actions of Borroloola Police and the TRS are helping to ensure the safely of local community members.

"The supply of illicit drugs and alcohol can have a significant negative impact in small communities," he said.

"Police will continue to focus on alcohol and drug related offences and residents are encouraged to continue reporting any criminal activity directly to local Police, or anonymously via the Crime Stoppers hotline 1800 333 000."
