Back to school traffic campaign - Alice Springs

Police

More than 1000 motorists were speed -checked during the back to school traffic campaign in Alice Springs this week.

Police speed-checked traffic at all schools in Alice Springs as thousands of children returned to school after the Christmas holidays.

Sergeant Conan Robertson of the Southern Traffic Operations unit said while 17 drivers were caught speeding, the results appeared to show that motorists were heeding warnings.

"With such a large number of drivers checked, it appears people are actually heeding our warnings about taking care around school zones and sticking to the 40 kph speed limit, so overall that's good news," Sergeant Robertson said.

"Of the 17 caught speeding none were doing more than 60 kph so it appears they simply forgot about the schools starting back.

"However, Police will continue to monitor traffic around the schools for the next several weeks."
