Back to school traffic campaign

Police

Police are warning motorists not to become complacent around school zones as they will continue to target these areas throughout the coming weeks.

Members from the Traffic Enforcement Unit and School Based Constables have been targeting speeding motorists in and around school zones since school resumed on Wednesday.

Acting Senior Sergeant Paul Faustmann from the Greater Darwin Regional Command Traffic Section said members have speed tested thousands of drivers and will continue over the next few weeks.

"We have tested 3,966 to date and issued 65 Traffic Infringement Notices.

"One person has received a summons and 66 received a caution relating to traffic offences.

"The top speed clocked travelling through a school zone was 64 km's an hour. I find this particularly disturbing as 24 km's over the 40 km marked speed can absolutely mean the difference between life and death, should an unsuspecting child walk into the path of the oncoming vehicle.

"Police will continue monitoring drivers and I urge all of you to heed the warnings, to stick to the speed limits and to always drive with caution through these zones" he said.
