Australia Day revellers warned

Police

Police are urging people to drink responsibly and make alternative travel arrangements in light of tomorrows planned festivities.

Virginia Read, Superintendent of the Greater Darwin Regional Command Support Division, said that members would be out in force targeting traffic offenders, particularly those who put theirs and others lives at risk by driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

"The message remains the same. Do not drink and drive as you will get caught.

"Also, keep in mind that even after returning home from a big night, upon entering your car the next morning, you may still be over the limit.

"A 22-year-old male caught drink driving yesterday was a perfect example of this.
Police had set up a random breath testing station in Stuart Park and at approximately 7:30 am the male was subjected to a test, later returning a result of 0.175 percent.

"It appears that the male had been drinking heavily the night before and thought he was OK to drive. He has been charged with driving with a high level blood alcohol content.

"The message we are hoping to get through to people is that if you have a big night drinking, you may still be over the limit the following day. Please use your common sense and organise a sober Bob or a taxi to get home as alcohol remains in your system for a number of hours after your last drink.

"Darwin Police will be out in force on Wednesday morning as it also marks back to school for many school students and we want to ensure that all road users are kept safe" she said.
