Police are calling for public assistance after a girl was assaulted in Wulagi over the weekend.

It is alleged a 17-year-old girl was attacked while walking home from Hibiscus Shopping Centre at about 9:45 pm on Saturday night. The victim believes she was followed down an alleyway on Vanderlin Service Road before being grabbed from behind by an unknown male as she entered the park on Curlew Circuit in Wulagi. The offender is alleged to have pushed the girl to the ground and punched her to the face a number time before attempting to remove her clothing.

The victim screamed and tried to fight the man off at which time he fled the scene towards the shopping centre.

A woman staying at a nearby house heard the victim screaming and called police.

The offender is described as a male of African or Aboriginal appearance, in his late teens early 20s and possibly wearing a dark singlet at the time of the attack.

Police are calling for witnesses and urge any one who may have seen the incident or who may have further information in relation to the attack to contact them on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Detective Senior Sergeant Robert Jordan said the public are the best source of information in circumstances like this.

"It doesn't matter how minor you may think a piece of information is, there is a possibility it could assist police with their investigation".
