A 21-year-old man was seriously injured after he was assaulted at Simpsons Gap west of Alice Springs at the weekend.

Police received a report around 6.30am yesterday that an ambulance was being sent to Simpsons Gap after the victim raised the alarm at the Ranger's station. The man was taken to Alice Springs Hospital where he was found to have a stab wound to the chest, a large laceration to the throat and multiple head wounds.

The victim told police he and three other people had driven to Simpsons Gap on Saturday night where they remained drinking until around 2.30am. The man said two men in the group then attacked him with a hammer and a knife. When he regained consciousness he was alone and walked to the Ranger's station to raise the alarm.

The man has since been medivaced to the Royal Adelaide Hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

Police investigations led to yesterday's arrest of two men aged 41 and 26. They are expected to be interviewed in relation to the assault later today.
