A man was arrested near Ramingining following the assault of a female police officer yesterday.

The off-duty officer was walking along a dirt road three kilometres from Ramingining around 4.30pm yesterday when she noticed a male following her. She was then knocked unconscious after being hit to the back of the head with an unknown object.

When she regained consciousness the man was standing over her, however, she managed to push him away and he ran off into the scrub. The victim hailed a passing motorist and was taken to the Ramingining Health Clinic where she received treatment for bruising and a laceration to her head requiring stitches.

Police were called and a 31-year-old man was arrested at a nearby outstation just before 10pm. He remains in custody at the Ramingining Police Station and is expected to be interviewed later today.
