Assault Police - Kulaluk

Police

At about 9.59 pm last night Police conducted a pro-active policing patrol at the Kulaluk Community in Darwin. Whilst conducting patrols of the community, their attention was drawn to about 7 people consuming alcohol in one of the houses at the community. Legislation prohibits the possession and consumption of alcohol in the Kulaluk Community.
Whilst police tried to take control of the person, at least seven others turned their aggression toward police. In a hostile manner, at least one tried to hit police with a rock.
"Alcohol is a contributing factor to violence in the community; police therefore will use whatever tools available to restrict alcohol consumption thus hopefully preventing incidents of violence. In this case, police used legislative authority to check for alcohol consumption in the Kulaluk community," Territory Duty Superintendent Daniel Shean said. "It is sad that, whilst doing their job to keep people safe, violence was used against the police resulting in a police officer being assaulted. Irrespective of the violence used against police on this occasion, police will continue to be pro-active in reducing alcohol fuelled violence by enforcing Restricted Premises and Restricted Area legislation." Fortunately, on this occasion, the police officer was not seriously hurt. Media Contact Sarah Gotch 0417 770 686
