Police are calling on assistance from members of the public that may have witnessed an assault that occurred in Darwin City last night.

It is alleged that a 39-year-old male was walking along Cavenagh Street near the Woolworths shopping centre at approximately 6:40 pm when he was approached by another male.

A short altercation occurred, resulting in the victim receiving lacerations to the face and chest.

Police and St John Ambulance members attended the location and conveyed the 39-year-old male to hospital.

The offender, aged 32, was located and arrested a short time later on McMinn Street.
