Police

Police are calling for public assistance after a man was assaulted in Darwin's CBD last night.

The 27-year-old victim was at the corner of Mitchell and Herbert Street when he was approached by four unknown males who asked him for a cigarette. When the man turned around to speak with the group they proceeded to punch and hit him with sticks before fleeing with his mobile phone.

St John Ambulance attended the scene and conveyed the victim to Royal Darwin Hospital with facial injuries.

Police conducted patrols of the area, however, were unable to locate the alleged offenders.

Investigations into the assault are continuing and police hope to view CCTV footage of the area today.
