Police are appealing to members of the public for assistance following a robbery on the Darwin Esplanade in the early hours of this morning.
Police received a report that a couple had been assaulted and robbed as they were sitting on a park bench around 3.30am.

The 19-year-old female victim told police she and her 23-year-old male friend were sitting on the bench when they were assaulted from behind. The male was knocked unconscious and was later taken to Royal Darwin Hospital. The woman told police the assailant grabbed her handbag containing approximately $70 and fled towards Peel Street.

The offender is described as being of Aboriginal appearance, approximately 168 cm tall with a solid build. He had medium-length Afro-styled hair and was wearing blue jeans and a black t-shirt with possibly a red logo on the front.

Police are appealing to anyone who was in the area of the Esplanade and Knuckey Street around the time of the assault to come forward.
