Assault and stealing incident - Karama

Police

Police are calling for public assistance after a taxi driver was assaulted and robbed in Karama over night.

The 23-year-old man attended the Karama Shopping Complex at about 1:30 am this morning to pick up an unknown male and convey him to Palmerston. On arrival the two men had a brief discussion in relation to method of payment when it was established the offender had no money.

The driver refused the fare and when the offender refused to exit the vehicle he walked to the rear door and attempted to assist him out. At this point the offender punched the driver once to the face before fleeing with about $400 in notes and coins stolen from the driver's side door.

He is alleged to have fled the scene in a southerly direction across Kalymnos drive into an empty dark block and through to Manunda terrace.

The man if described as a 22-25-year-old male of Aboriginal appearance and medium build with an unshaven moustache, afro hair style with the hair tied up, approximately 177cms tall and was wearing a dark red short sleeved t-shirt with lighter grey colour shorts and no shoes. The offender appeared to have been walking with a limp at the time of the incident.
