Arson - Tennant Creek

Police

On arrival, the fire crew located two separate origins of fire.

A small wood pile stacked against the backyard shed had been lit, however this fire had been extinguished by neighbours before fire fighters arrived at the scene. The shed remains structurally sound with only smoke damage.

The second fire which had been lit in the laneway behind the house was promptly extinguished by the fire service.

Upon further inspection, Police believe the offenders unlawfully entered the property, causing damage to various items and stealing beverages from the fridge.

It is alleged the offenders then made repairs to their pushbikes in the shed, before lighting the fires. The pushbikes were left at the property.

Damage and loss is estimated at between $5,000.00 and $10,000.00.

A crime scene has been established and Police are currently conducting inquiries.

Four youths aged between eight and twelve have been spoken to with two to be summonsed for property offences.

The Officer in Charge at Tennant Creek Fire Station, Leigh Swift, says the first people at the scene prevented the fire from spreading.

"I would like to thank the members of the public whose quick actions stopped the fire from spreading before the fire crews had arrived.

"This incident acts as a timely reminder to all that the fire season is approaching and it is very important to have long grass cut and removed from in and around building and vacant blocks," he said.

Anyone who may have further information in relation to the incident is urged to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
