Arrest - Traffic Offences and Assault

Police

An 18-year-old man has been charged in relation to a number of traffic offences after he was apprehended at Fort Hill Wharf yesterday.

It is alleged the offender was involved in an incident on 20 November where he was observed riding an unregistered trail bike in Winnellie. Police attempted to apprehend the bike on Coonawarra Road, however the offender accelerated away and a short pursuit was initiated. During this pursuit the offender was identified by police and it was terminated a short time later.

Palmerston Police attended the wharf yesterday after receiving information that the recidivist offender was at that location. Upon arrival members located and arrested the man before he was taken to Darwin Watch House and later interviewed.

He has since been charged with the following:

Drive a motor vehicle unlicensed
Drive an unregistered / uninsured motor vehicle
Fail to obey signal of a police member
Drive in a dangerous manner
2 x fail to use left indicator
2 x fail to use right indicator
Ride vehicle recklessly
The man was also interviewed in relation to a serious assault incident which occurred in Rosebery on 3 October where it is alleged the offender and another man assaulted a mini bus driver. The offender and co offender are alleged to have waved down the vehicle before assaulting the 42 year-old driver and leaving him unconscious at the scene.

Police have also charged him with aggravated assault in relation to this incident.

Senior Sergeant Wayne Jenkinson said this was a good arrest.

"This man is a known recidivist offender with no regard for NT road rules and we will not tolerate this dangerous behaviour.

"We will continue to target these people and get them off our roads" he said.
