A man armed with several knives has been arrested by NT Police in the Smith Street Mall.

The man, who police describe as Caucasian, was taken into custody at around 1.30pm and is currently being questioned at the Darwin Watch House.

It's expected he will initially be charged with possession of a controlled weapon.
