Arrest - Deprivation of liberty and aggravated assault

A 45-year-old male has been arrested after assaulting a woman in Tennant Creek Yesterday.

It is believed the man held the 39-year-old victim in a caravan for over two months against her will. He is alleged to have secured the van with external locks and screwed the windows shut while he left the premises for work.

The victim and offender are known to each other.

Yesterday at about 7:30pm a 40-year-old woman witnessed a verbal altercation between the two before the man punched the victim and forced her back into the caravan. After the offender left the premises the woman broke into the van freeing the victim and called authorities.

St John Ambulance attended the conveyed the victim to hospital.

Upon police arrival the offender had returned to the scene and was immediately arrested and conveyed to the Tennant Creek Police Station where he remains in police custody while further enquiries are conducted.

Detective Sergeant Glenn Leafe said "NT Police commend the member of the public who intervened and provided assistance to the victim"
