A 21-year-old man was arrested yesterday after he allegedly stole a 30cm kitchen knife from a store and chased a number of people with it through the CBD.

Police received a report just after 1.30pm that a man was running through K-Mart threatening people with a knife. A further report was received from the staff at nearby Blockbuster Video that he had threatened another man.

The offender then approached an unoccupied police car and was arrested after trying to gain entry to the vehicle.

He has been charged with:

Aggravated assault (two counts)
Being armed with a controlled weapon
Interfere with a motor vehicle
Assault police
Disorderly behaviour in a police station
Furnish a false name.

He was refused bail and appeared in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court today.
