A 44-year-old man will appear in court after allegedly abducting a five-year-old boy in Tennant Creek yesterday.

Police said the incident occurred outside the Foodbarn in Paterson Street just after 2.30pm. Witnesses told police the boy was playing out the front of the store when a man picked him up and started walking away. The boy's mother raised the alarm and chased the man who then put the boy down and fled. Police arrested the man a short time later.

He has been charged with abduction of a child under 16 and assault of a child under 16. He will appear in the Tennant Creek Magistrates Court today.
