Alcohol seizures –Alice Springs

Police

Six people were arrested and 167 litres of alcohol were seized during a joint operation on Larapinta Drive at the weekend.

Detective Acting Sergeant Tim Lee said the operation involved members of the Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk, the Drug Intelligence Unit, Southern Traffic Operations members and police from Hermannsburg, Haasts Bluff and Kulgera.

"The aim of this operation was to detect and seize alcohol being brought into remote communities. We targeted Hermannsburg in particular due to the football finals at the weekend," Det A/Sgt Lee said.

" Traditionally there are a lot of people travelling to and from the community during a football weekend and often we have problems with grog being brought back into the community from Alice Springs. During the course of the operation from 4pm to 11pm on Saturday, police pulled over 96 cars and 167 litres of alcohol were seized.

"Six people were arrested for drink driving and other traffic offences, five were issued with traffic infringement notices and one person will be summonsed for failing to stop when directed by police to do so.

Det A/Sgt Lee said police would continue to combine forces on a regular basis to disrupt the transportation of illicit substances and alcohol into communities.
