Aggravated Assault - Palmerston

Police

Palmerston Police currently have two 17-year-old males in custody after the serious assault of a 46-year-old man over night.

It is alleged the victim was walking along Temple Terrace near the shopping centre in Palmerston at about 1:00 am this morning when the incident occurred. The offenders are alleged to have asked the man for money before punching him and stealing his wallet and mobile phone and fleeing the area on a bike.

The victim is believed to have then walked to the bus exchange to use the telephone before returning to the shopping centre where he was again approached by the offenders. The youths are then alleged to have again punched and kicked the victim to the face. At this point a number of nearby witnesses intervened and assisted the victim to the Palmerston Police Station where they were met by officers.

St John Ambulance attended and conveyed the man to Royal Darwin Hospital where he received treatment for his injuries.

Police conducted patrols of the area and located the offenders' nearby a short time later. They remain in police custody and will be interviewed this afternoon.

Superintendent Tony Fuller commended the witnesses who intervened and stopped the assault

"This was a terrible attack and we thank the members of the public who intervened and assisted this man".

"This was a good timely arrest made by Palmerston members with the assistance of witnesses and we will continue to target these types of offenders" he said.
