At about 9.17 pm last night Police and Fire and Rescue personnel were called to a vehicle fire on Mitchell Street near Elkes Backpackers.

Fire and Rescue crew extinguished the blaze which caused extensive fire damage to the bonnet area of the blue Ford utility. The vehicle, bearing Victorian registration plates, is being treated as a crime scene and has been transported to the Forensic Services Centre for further analysis.

Police are treating the incident as suspicious and are seeking any witnesses.

Any one who may have any information that may assist police or sighted any persons acting suspiciously in the area over night are urged to call Police on 131444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
