Vehicle Crash Noonamah - 4362455

Police received a report at about 3:30pm yesterday of an accident in Noonamah where a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle on Redcliffe Road.

It appears a 12-year-old girl was intending to cross the road after exiting her school bus while using her mobile phone and walked into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

The 59-year-old man driving a Kia Rio sedan applied the brakes in an attempt to avoid the child however could not stop in time and collided with her.

Police and Saint John Ambulance attended the scene and the girl was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital with head injuries. She remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit.

Initial investigations indicate speed and alcohol were not contributing factors in the crash.

Investigations are continuing.

"This is an extremely upsetting incident for the family and the driver of the vehicle" said Duty Superintendent Bruce Porter.

"It is a timely reminder to slow down around school buses and exercise caution when passing them".
