A service station was broken into and an empty cash register stolen in an unlawful entry overnight.

Police received a report shortly after 2am today of an unlawful entry at the Coles Express Alice Springs on Gap Road.

It appears the offender gained entry into the store by using a large piece of concrete slab to smash the front main entrance door.

Security footage shows the man stealing the cash register, tobacco, food and drink and leaving the premises.

The cash register was extensively damaged when found by police earlier this morning on the Telegraph terrace footbridge.

Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or know any further information to contact Police on 131 444 or Crime stoppers on 1800 333 000.
